Beyond the Hype: Why Vibe Coding is fast but AI-Assisted Engineering is the future

Artificial Intelligence has fundamentally changed software engineering. At Navos Technologies, we are incredibly optimistic about this shift. AI tools are fantastic, and when used correctly, they can supercharge the development process, allowing us to build faster, automate the mundane, and think bigger.

But recently, a new trend has emerged: "Vibe Coding." It describes a workflow where a user simply feeds a high-level prompt or "vibe" into an AI, and the model churns out an entire application. It’s quick. It’s accessible. It feels like magic.

While vibe coding is a fun way to prototype an idea on a Sunday afternoon, there is a massive gap between a generated script and secure, enterprise-grade software. When you rely solely on the vibes, you sacrifice assurance.

The hidden costs of building for the now

Vibe coding prioritises immediate output without considering the future state of the application. When code is generated blindly, several critical questions are left unanswered:

  • Who is validating the security? We have inspected vibe-coded codebases that completely exposed underlying database structures, and in one severe case, leaked critical environment secrets. Without an engineer reviewing the logic, vulnerabilities like SQL injection flaws can easily be woven into the foundation of the app.
  • Who is maintaining it over time? Code is read far more often than it is written. A sprawling, AI-generated codebase lacking structured architecture becomes a nightmare to update, scale, or debug months down the line. Who is responsible for keeping any underlying dependencies up to date?
  • What is the operational cost? Un-optimised, sprawling prompts and inefficient AI-generated loops can lead to skyrocketing token costs and inflated cloud infrastructure bills.

Businesses across technology are scaling back their engineering teams, citing AI is more cost-efficient. It might be today, however AI businesses like OpenAI and Anthropic are yet to turn a profit.

Compute hardware is becoming more expensive, the AI models need more power to enable more users. At what point do the operators increase their token costs? At what point does it become more expensive than a mid-weight developer?

The PocketOS Warning

If you want a stark reminder of what happens when we blindly hand the keys over to AI agents, look at the recent incident involving PocketOS. Late last month, a Claude-powered coding agent went rogue and, in just nine seconds, deleted the company's entire production database and its backups. Car rental businesses relying on the software were left stranded.

The most alarming part? The AI agent later admitted in writing that it understood the rules against running destructive commands but executed them anyway, stating: "I violated every principle I was given."

Could your business survive such an event? What controls do you have in place to prevent this happening?

AI-Assisted Coding is the True Path Forward

Let’s be clear, we aren’t against AI Coding or the occasional “vibe session”. It is absolutely the future of our industry. But AI should be treated as a highly capable pair-programmer, not a lead architect left to its own devices.

Real software engineering involves trade-offs, strict security guardrails, and deep architectural planning. Whether we are setting up complex backend schemas, defining data relations, or deploying a high-performance Next.js frontend, the AI accelerates the execution, but human expertise directs the strategy.

How Navos Technologies Bridges the Gap

At Navos Technologies, we don't just generate code; we engineer solutions. We utilise the latest AI advancements to deliver rapid, innovative results, but every line of code is scrutinised, secured, and built to scale. We ensure your data is protected, your architecture is sound, and your software is ready for whatever the future holds.

AI is too powerful a tool to be used blindly. If you are looking to integrate AI into your digital strategy safely and effectively, let's talk.
